Network vulnerabilities fall into three categories.  These categories are Hardware-Based, Software-based, and Human-based

Hardware-based:

It is important to keep the software and firmware up to date on all of your devices.  As vulnerabilities are discovered reputable vendors will release updates that will address the vulnerabilities.  It is also important to buy from reputable vendors.

Software-based:

It is not only important to keep software applications updated but also to know what software is installed on your computers.  Unmanaged software, software installed by employees without IT approval, can lead to outdated and buggy software.  It is important for IT to work with employees to make sure that the software that they need is installed and updated to prevent employees from installing unknown software on computers.

Human-based:

Human-based vulnerabilities are often the hardest to prevent.  Getting people to understand and follow security policy can be challenging.  People tend to think that Hackers and Cyber criminals are going after the “Big Guys” and not the smaller businesses.  This is not true, 43% of cyber-attacks target small businesses and 60% of small businesses that are victims of a cyber-attack go out of business within six months.
