On April 29, a weather phenomenon called a derecho hit western Pennsylvania, with the brunt of the storm passing through Pittsburgh. Some of our customers faced power outages that lasted up to a week. Here are some things we saw and how they can be prevented.
During the power outages, customers with cloud-based infrastructures were able to access their systems remotely. Even if your office or facility is without power, employees can still work remotely when systems are hosted in the cloud. Customers who are still using self-hosted Microsoft Exchange were without email through the extended power outage. Moving your servers and email to the cloud can help your organization better withstand severe storms like this.
Customers who use a home computer to remote into their office computers faced challenges. Either the office PC was down, or its address changed when it came back online. Using a VPN connection on a laptop is a much more efficient way to do this.
After the power came back, many customers realized that their cable internet was still down. Customers who have a redundant internet connection were able to stay online. If you’re considering a secondary connection, we can help you integrate it into your network.
